But all that seemed to change when he came off the bench and curled a delicious left-foot shot beyond Leeds’ goalkeeper Paddy Kenny in the fourth minute of added time to complete a 3-1 win.

The 31-year-old midfielder was involved more in the second half of the season and he has now signed a new one-year deal to stay at the club.

“I am delighted to have signed,” said Davies, whose contract was due to expire in the summer.

Davies admits the season was a strange one for him.

“To be honest, the early part was a bit of a blur really,” he said.

“I had a couple of problems off the field and probably for the first time in my career classic football shirts wasn’t the most important thing in my life.

“The Leeds intention was a turning level. It probably kicked off my season.

“I came on and luckily I seem to always score towards Leeds. My first aim for Derby was towards them.

“Things then seemed to fall into place on and off the field. I got back in the team and was able to concentrate on my cheap football jerseys online a bit more.”

Davies made 26 appearances (nine starts) and scored five goals this season.

“The second half of the season was enjoyable. It was nice to contribute and score a few goals,” said Davies.

“As a footballer there is nothing worse than just training and not playing but in the second half of the season I was involved and playing games.

“That tests you mentally, more than anything.

“Once I was offered a new deal, I was always going to sign it.

“This is a massive club. You don’t walk away from a club like this.”

Nigel Clough sees Davies as an important member of the squad.

“We are pleased Ben is going to be sticking around for another year,” said the manager.

“He’s been an important player for us, especially in the second half of the season when we’ve started with him and when he’s come off the bench in games.

“Ben understands he might not be starting every week but he appreciates how highly we value him and knows he can still have an impact on the side.

“We didn’t involve him early in the season but that wasn’t anything towards him.

“What Ben did was keep his head down and work his way back into the side.”
